The
following review provided by Scott Plagenhoef of Pitchfork
Media: Posh and fashionably detached, Sophie Ellis-Bextor
is one of the last people I would have expected to bemoan
the state of the nation and seek solace in knowing that
others are hurting, too, but she manages both on her
new single, a cover of Bobby O's underground disco (not
disco) hit. With Sophie's flat, dry delivery, the song's
either/or boy/girl relationship and political commentary
lyric comes off like sober advice and/or profundity.
And combined with the soaring Gibb Brother-esque back-up
vocal, delicate 4/4 rhythm, and nu-disco sheen, Sophie
sounds like Neil Tennant's little sister. It doesn't
reach the highs of 2001's "Murder on the Dancefloor",
but it still kills. |
